What is an Endogenic System?

An endogenic system, usually shortened to "endo," is an umbrella term for anyone who identifies their system origin as not stemming from trauma. Some examples include willogenic (a system willed into existence), spitegenic (a system formed out of spite), and tulpagenic (a system formed through tulpamancy, a closed practice originating from Tibetan Buddhism).

History of the term "Endogenic"

The first known website to address multiplicity outside of clinical settings was Astraea's Web, launched in 1995. A year later, in 1996, Astraea's Web coined the term "natural multiplicity." The site proposed that having alters, or multiple personalities, is a natural phenomenon that can occur spontaneously and naturally. It stated that it was just another way of perceiving the world While the concept initially appealed to some, Astraea's Web faced heavy criticism. Critics argued that the sources and rhetoric on the site reflected extreme ableism and sanism?, as well as an anti-psychiatry bias.Later that same year, the term "mid-continuum" was coined by an early internet user named Vickis. This term was derived from Braun's dissociative continuum model, which proposed that dissociation exists on a spectrum ranging from normal dissociation to polyfragmented DID. This term was created to describe dissociatives who felt they were somewhere in the middle of the dissociative continuum; individuals who felt they did not meet the full criteria for a diagnosis of DID or were looking to label their experiences. Vickis also stated that people who use the mid-continuum label would be given an OSDD diagnosis.Over the years, the term "mid continuum" became widely used on the internet. However, as its popularity grew, it also faced criticism. Anti-DID and anti-psychiatry groups began to criticize the term, claiming it was derogatory toward empowered plurals. One particular group, Dark Personalities, advocated for a replacement term. Subsequently, the term "Median" was coined by Blackbirds and anti-DID organizations known as the Lancers & Pavilion. This group excluded individuals with DID/OSDD, as well as multiples who struggled to work with their parts, because they did not "present as strong, sane, and responsible to the world."I'll continue when I have more motivation, sorry

Why are they harmful?

As stated in the history section of this website, many terms used by endogenic systems, such as natural multiplicity, were coined by individuals who were anti-DID and anti-psychiatry.Even today, people with complex dissociative disorder are often told they have internalized pluralphobia because they are "blaming their abuser(s) for becoming multiple." Other ways endogenic systems can be harmful to people with complex dissociative disorders include the amount of misinformation they spread about people who have alters or systems. Systems, and by extension alters, are caused by trauma and dissociation. While the presence of alters usually indicates a disorder, with treatment, the parts typically learn to work together. Other forms of misinformation include, but are not limited to:∘ The belief alters can be willed into existence.
∘ The belief that alters can transfer from person to person.
∘ The belief that spiritual mediums and tulpamancy are forms of multiplicity.
∘ The belief that disorders such as adhd, autism, depression, anxiety, etc can cause alters.
∘ The comparison of other cultures to the discrimination of non-traumagenic multiples
Many people within the endogenic community are strongly anti-psychiatry. While the psychiatric system does have its issues, advocating for DID, and by extension alters, to be demedicalized downplays the seriousness of what a person must go through to develop alters.
